Common Questions and Answers About Hypnosis
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a consented state of psycho-physiological relaxation where the subject willingly receives ideas. The suggested ideas can then be adopted once the subject returns to a conscious state of mind with limited or no interference.
How Does Hypnosis Work?
A trained hypnotist will use breathing techniques, repetition, verbal queues, and mental visualization to guide a person or people into trance. Those in trance are still in control of themselves, but their bodies become more relaxed and their minds are more responsive to suggestions. It will appear those in trance are asleep, but their brain activity enables them to know what is going on around them.
Is Hypnosis Dangerous?
Hypnosis is a safe procedure when done by a trained hypnotist. Hypnosis is not mind-control or brainwashing. Trained hypnotists would not ethically make anyone say or do something against his or her will.
Can Anyone be Hypnotized?
Hypnosis can work for almost anyone, though some people have an easier time than others. Those highly susceptible to hypnotic suggestion are those who believe they can be hypnotized, those experiencing strong emotional feelings, and sleep cycle and meals can impact the results. Also, the person being hypnotized must be able to understand the communication of the hypnotist.
What is the Hypnotic Experience Like?
Being in trance enable the hypnotized person to block out distractions. A hypnosis state involves increased attention, concentration, and suggestibility. It can feel similar to the sensation experienced prior to falling asleep. It is generally perceived as a pleasant sensation, and coming out of trance can feel cathartic and well-rested.
How Long Does a Hypnosis Session Last?
Hypnosis sessions generally last 1-2 hours, depending on what specific issue is being addressed during the hypnosis session.
How Many Times Will I need Hypnosis?
It depends on the individual undergoing hypnosis, and why the session is happening. The issue can potentially be resolved in as little as one session.
Can I Use Hypnosis as a Sole Method of Treatment?
Hypnosis is often used in conjunction with other therapies and treatments. The decision to use hypnosis as a sole treatment, as an add-on treatment in psychotherapy, and/or with traditional medicine is made in consultation with a qualified professional. It is strongly recommended to seek guidance from a professional medical and/or mental health care giver in order to make the best decision for your individual needs.
Myths About Hypnosis
Hypnosis is Sleep
Hypnosis does not involve falling asleep. A person undergoing hypnosis remains awake, and his or her focus is fixed in a way that may make them seem zoned out.
Consciousness is Lost During Hypnosis
A person undergoing hypnosis is in a hyper-focused state of consciousness. This allows the experiences his or her subconscious must become a modified way of looking at reality. Learning during sleep (where consciousness is lost) is possible, but the memory traces produced are not consciously accessible when awake like that from hypnosis.
Hypnosis Causes Loss of Control/Allows Being Controlled
The hypnotized person surrenders his or her control only when he or she wants or needs to in order to solve a problem. A trained, ethical hypnotist will not make a hypnotized person do anything he or she was not already willing and capable of doing.
Hypnotized People Reveal Secrets
The conscious mind preserves itself and does not disappear during hypnosis. It simply “supervises" the hypnosis process as it happens, and ensures all remains safe. Issues are generally worked out quietly within the subconscious of the hypnotized person.
It is Possible to Not Come Out of Hypnosis
No one has ever not come out of hypnosis. It is possible to fall asleep during hypnosis, but that is the worst case scenario.
Only Gullible or Weak-Minded People Can Be Hypnotized
Stronger-minded people often make better candidates for hypnosis because they want to use hypnosis as a tool to remove blockages from them achieving their life goals.
A Dominant Personality is Required for Hypnosis
A dominant person may be more engaged in the hypnosis process, but it is more important for the person being hypnotized to be calm and relaxed. A non-invasive and nuturing personality is more effective when using hypnosis to fix an issue or achieve a goal.
Hypnosis is the Same Thing as Practicing Psychology
Hypnosis is a process used to guide a person's conscious mind to communicate with his or her subconscious. Psychologists are highly educated and trained to understand and explain thoughts, emotions, feelings, and behavior. Both can be highly effective when used in conjunction with one another.
Hypnosis Causes Harm
The conscious mind of individuals undergoing hypnosis will not allow harm, and neither will a trained hypnotist.
